A Friend of Mine

Recently, a ministry friend of mine performed an incredible act of kindness and I was moved greatly. After pondering over the actions, I began to think about friendships and how meaningful they can and should be, especially among Christians and ministry leaders. In my mind, here’s a (not so new) list of things a true friend out to portray:

A Friend Hears you…
This goes without saying, but I’m referring to listening beyond the audible. A true friend Hears our spirit, not just the syllables of our speech. Sometimes they Hear us even when our utterances are something altogether different than our inner intentions and desires.

A Friend Helps you…
After hearing what we’re “really” saying, a friend does whatever they can to Help us, regardless of whether we ask them to or not. I’ve heard it said before, “A friend is someone who reaches for your hand, but touches your heart.” Most of the time, we can determine the “trueness” of our friends by their willingness to get “uncomfortable” for our sake.

A Friend Honors you…
I’m not sure there’s anything more disheartening than to hear that a “friend” of ours has said or done something less than honorable to us or about us. We can be depend upon the integrity and character of a true friend, whether we are in their presence or not.

A Friend Humbles you…
This can be done in two ways…one, by honestly confronting us concerning a matter that needs attention we may be blind to. When this happens, we need to understand how difficult it must have been for them to do so, appreciating all the more the genuineness of their friendship. Another way a friend can Humble us, is through their continual acts of kindness and appreciation. More than I’d like to admit, I’ve been Humbled by a friend’s contribution to our relationship in comparison to mine.

A Friend Hopes in and for you…
The encouragement received by a true friend can be the very thing that keeps us from staying down after we’ve been knocked down or tripped up. In the same respect, a true friend is just as happy as we are for blessings in our lives…they desire the best for us!

These are just some of the things that describe true friend…my question to you is not, “Do you have these kind of friends?”, rather, “Are you this kind of friend? Do you possess these traits for your friends? Are you a true friend?”

In closing, I realize I haven’t shared a single biblical reference for these traits, but any student of the Word had several come to mind. Here’s the thing, we all have a true Friend, His name is Jesus, and He encompasses all these things and so much more! If you don’t know Him, I’d love to introduce you to Him!

Prov. 18:24 ¶ A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
